There's a soft spot in my heart for Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and one reason is because it gave my first dog her name, Belle. My parents adopted Belle from a shelter the year before I was born. According to my mom, when I was a baby and she would put me down on the carpet for a little while, Belle would curl up protectively next to me. One of my first words was apparently an attempt to say her name. I think it suited her because, as my uncle once said, "Belle was a lady." She was generally very quiet, not the sort of dog who barked at other dogs on the street or tried to knock over visitors to the house, although in the evenings when my dad got home she would express her excitement by running laps around the backyard. She was also smart, and her border collie instincts would come out sometimes, like when she herded my brother out the door so he could catch the bus to school in the mornings. She was a good girl.
